No longer serving seniors, the old Hoquiam Senior Center is in dire need of a youthful recharge. Amazingly, the building still has tenants, but they are typically short term with nowhere else to turn. Not knowing who the next long-term tenant might be, the City's goal is to improve the shell of the building to help attract new business downtown. After previously achieving the same goal with the old Train Depot down the street, the City is approaching this project with the same enthusiasm and dividing it into phases to be accomplished as funds allow.
Phase I is to seal up the exterior of the building so no additional damage is caused by the weather. As funds become available, this phase shall include touch-up and repair of old and failing plaster, un-blocking and installing new windows and doors on the south facade, and new paint to protect the building and highlight forgotten features.
Phase II shall complete the exterior improvements by removing the existing "industrial range hood" entry canopy, installing a new more appropriate canopy, and installing new doors and windows on the front facade. This phase shall also include interior improvements to the exterior walls, new millwork around doors and windows, and removing the suspended ceiling to open the space and improve natural daylighting.
